Tobi Amusan set a record as the first Nigerian to be nominated among the top 10 nominees for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year by the World Athletics.
Amusan is the world 100m hurdles, Diamond League, Commonwealth and African 100m hurdles champion as well as world record holder in 100m hurdles at 12.12secs.
According to the world athletics body, the nominees were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of World Athletics.
This marks the opening of the voting process for the 2022 World Athletes of the Year ahead of the World Athletics Awards 2022 and it is a three-way voting process will determine the five finalists on October 31.

Apart from Amusan, other top athletes listed among the nominees include Chase Ealey of USA; Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica; Kimberly Garcia of Peru; Shericka Jackson of Jamaica; Faith Kipyegon of Kenya; Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine; Sydney McLaughlin of USA; Shaunae Miller-Uibo of Bahamas and Yulimar Rojas.
The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the World Athletics social media platforms.
The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25% of the final result.
Voting for the World Athletes of the Year closes at midnight on Monday 31 October while five women and five men finalists will be announced by World Athletics with the winners to be announced in early December.
