Ex-militants seek govts’ support for flood victims

NATIONAL Coalition of Urhobo-Isoko Ex-Agitators (NCU-IE) has called on governments to rescue victims of devastating floods in Niger Delta and most parts of the country

It said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and those of states should intensify rescue efforts as the flood had resulted in huge humanitarian crisis everywhere.

The group spoke in a statement after its meeting at Ughelli in Delta State.

It noted that many had been rendered homeless in Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa and other states, with schools shut,  and loss of farmlands threatening livelihoods.

“Our people are homeless, farmlands flooded, no food and shelter.

‘’Governments should come to the aid of the people. We call on NEMA, SEMA and others to rise to the occasion.

‘’People need shelter, food, clothes and medical attention. Government should treat the situation in Niger Delta and elsewhere as a national emergency.” NCU-IE said.

Group’s National Secretary, Abraham Ekokotu, also raised concerns about those impersonating its National Chairman, ‘General’ Joseph Figbele.

Passing a confidence vote in the ‘General’, he noted that unpleasant persons had made clandestine moves to use the chairman’s name for their dubious agenda.

He warned them to desist, saying anyone caught impersonating Figbele would be handed over to the authorities.

‘General’ Figbele remains our national chairman, none should transact business with anyone outside the Figbele-led executive,  Ekokotu said.

An umbrella body of ex-militants of Isoko and Urhobo extractions, the statement said the group protects the interest of Niger Delta by interfacing with governments and critical stakeholders.
