Nigeria’s first Aviation Minister Amechi dies at 93

Nigeria’s first Aviation Minister and the last member of the Zikist Movement, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, has died.

The man popularly called “The Boy Is Good” died yesterday in Abuja.

He was 93.

President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governors Charles Soludo (Anambra) and Hope Uzodimma (Imo) and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, among others, have commiserated with the family of the deceased.

A former National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh; the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji; a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and member of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, have expressed sadness over the demise of the former minister.

President Buhari sent his condolence message in a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

In his condolence message through his media office in Abuja, Atiku said: “Chief Mbazuluike was an outstanding nationalist, Pan-Africanist extraordinaire and a great associate and friend of the African legend, Nelson Mandela.”

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser, Oguwike Nwachuku, Governor Uzodimma noted that the late Chief Amechi’s message of equity, fairness and justice resonated well across all the length and breadth of the country.

In a statement by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide said the late Amaechi’s last wish was to see the Leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, released from incarceration.

The former minister reportedly left his Ukpor palatial home in Anambra State and joined his son in Abuja when he became weak.
