Traffic eased considerably at the weekend along Calabar– Odukpani -Itu federal highway linking Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State.
The ease of traffic followed an intervention work carried out by one of Nigeria’s indigenous construction firm, Sermatech Nigeria limited.
Speaking on the intervention works, Engineer Iheanacho Chimeze, the Project Engineer of Sermatech Nigeria Limited, said: “We have a contract on the stretch of the road but where we are is a stretch that belongs to Julius Berger Nigeria Limited. Our own stretch is from the power plant to Oku Iboku in Akwa Ibom State and the reason why we are here today is that we came for an intervention. We have seen that stretch of the road had collapsed and for three days now vehicles have not been able to pass through and we also have problem bring our materials from Awi, Akamkpa and Iwuru. So we have to come here to intervene and make it motorable so that Cross Riverians and other Nigerians who ply the road will have access.”

He added: “We will intervene in those areas that are bad so that the traffic will flow.
We are working in about 11km of the road, between Odukpani to Itu in Akea Ibom State. The Earth work is about 11km, the bridges we are working on are three bridges simultaneously. We are moving and we hope that we’ll put all things in order.”
“We are working with terms of the contract and with time given to us to do the work. We will keep to every aspect of the terms of contract.”
