Odili challenges MedLab graduates on discipline and attitude

The Pro-chancellor PAMO University of Medical Science (PUMS), Dr. Peter Odili has enjoined pioneer graduates of Medical Laboratory Science of the university to embrace discipline and right attitude .

Dr. Odili, who spoke at the graduation, induction and oath taking  of the first set of students admitted into the Department of Medical Laboratory Science when the  university took off in 2017, noted that the aim of the institution is to raise crop of people that would make a difference wherever they go.

He urged them to ensure punctuality to work, and teamwork in workplaces to guarantee positive results.

The ceremony was held at the University campus in Port Harcourt,  Rivers State. Two of the 13 students made first class honours and were awarded automatic employment by the school.

Addressing the youths, the former Rivers State Governor said:  “As a university, we’ve aimed at making you make a difference wherever you go after now, and two things will make it possible for you to make a difference everywhere you go; first is discipline, discipline and discipline.

“What does it come to? you supposed to be at work by 7 am, no excuses, be there at 7 am.

This is very important just like your teachers had already told you, one minute absence can make room for irreversible damage to your patients.

“So be there when you are supposed to be there, it will stand you out, don’t say the next person does not come in time…, you will make a difference  for yourself.

“Another thing that will make you stand out and make a difference  is your attitude to your patients and those who work with you.”

“Once you hold these two principles, the sky will be your take off point.” You’ve just received your licence,  the rest of the journey in life is in your hand.” he told them

He assured the Scientists that they would not lose any time for their internship as the state university teaching hospital has offered them automatic  internship.

“As you start work in the next few days, we’re going to monitor you, to see whether you are carrying the flag of PAMO properly, and if you do, at the end of your National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), you have automatic employment, and those of you who would like to go into Lecturing, the university will be ready for your postgraduate training.”

He directed the Vice chancellor, to engage those who made first class honours in the university as graduate assistants.

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria(MLSCN), Dr. Tosan Erhabor extolled the quality of the new graduates and reiterated their induction as members of  Medical Laboratory Scientists Council of Nigeria.

He said: “It is not just university or PAMO University that has deemed these ones fit in learning and character, but as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Medical Lab. Science of Nigeria, I can vouch for them.

“This is because during the cause of their training, I did send some eminent medical Laboratory  Scientists to participate in their examinations, the feedback i got was that the students that  became Medical Lab. Scientists today are one of the best they’ve seen in recent time.

“Based on that report, I vouch for this first batch of Medical  Laboratory Scientists of the department of Medicine, PAMO University. “

He urged the institution to continue to support the department, to continue to show that mentorship, hardwork pays, rather than cutting corners.
