The Managing Director of Big Homes, Topsy Essien, has called on the government to make land more affordable in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
He said this while commissioning a project by Big Homes in Asokoro in Abuja.
Essien if the price of land is more affordable, it would provide many people the opportunity to own their own homes.
He said, “We also have affordable projects. We cater for mostly the middle class from the high end to the lower end. We have many affordable houses. In every location you find us, our houses are usually the most affordable. So far, the way the cost of land is in Abuja, it is really hard for us to offer something as affordable as we would have wished. We always plead with the government to make land affordable. There still so much land in Abuja, lying fallow. Some people own like 200 hectares that were allocated to them 20 years ago, they are not doing anything with it. Let us see how we can partner with them to make houses more affordable. With N2.5 million or N3 million, you can actually own a home if the land is affordable. So for me that is the end game. If we can do that houses would be affordable.”

He said the project, which is one of their most prestigious ones, Major Casa, is cherished because it is a complete package.
“It has all the services that we offer from automation to some kind of unique design and comfort. It is a semi detached and sits on 2400 square metres. It is just for two families. It is a unique kind of design. We focus on space instead of a bigger apartment and no space to play around. It is a four bedroom and a five bedroom, all en-suite. It is for sale and when you talk about affordability it is relative. When you look around and compare the prices of units around here, you know they go for like N400 to N500 million. Here we are offering N250 million. It is way lower and very affordable,” he said.
He said some of the challenges they were facing include price hikes, the change in valuation and inflation.
Public Relations Officer of Big Homes, Ambassador Ijeoma Bristol, said despite the economy, they were staying the course and providing employment for so many people.
“And then the most important thing is that at the end of the day, giving the client what they have paid for. Big Homes gives you what you paid for and that is what is most important,” she added.
