Dubai-based Nigerian artist, Fatimehin Abiodun popularly known as Bonzlight has spoken on what defines his music,
The Ondo-born said his life as an independent artist has a profound effect on his kind of music as he has to toil tenaciously and tirelessly for everything he has achieved as a singer.
His songs, according to him, are a reflection of his hustles, struggles, pains and success along the way.
He said:“The biggest elements that inspire me are, one, the struggle and pain; two, success and happiness; Three, prosperity and joy; four, money, wealth and riches; six , love of a woman and love from mother to son; lastly sounds that can make people dance. These are the music components I deliver when making different music.It has to be simple, rhythmic and no complexities. Music should be smooth and melodic.”
Bonzlight also shared his growth process in terms of music, highlighting those that shaped his view and musical coloration.

As a young Yoruba boy, he grew up listening to the music of Yoruba origin. Like the children of his time, the music of the likes of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Fela Anikuklapo Kuti and K1 De Ultimate played a tremendous role in shaping his musical orientation.
“My music is a fusion of what I grew up listening to, K1 De Ultimate, Fela and Obey. My music is a blend of modern pop and Afrobeats sound. It’s a special blend created by me, and it’s different and it’s my unique sound,”:he said.
Bonzlight started his musical journey at 17 and went professional in 2010. He is a committed hustler, imbued with the burning passion to hone his craft to perfection and has come a long way in making his voice heard.
“I started when I was 17, the kind of music being played at parties back then , talking about King Sunny Ader, Commander Ebenezer Obey, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Junior and Pretty , K1 De Ulmitate, influenced my musical growth. Those were the people I listened to while growing up and I always prayed to drop songs that would trend and have strong messages like the kind of songs they released. Back then,” he reiterated.
Early last year he stirred up the emotions of music lovers with a single titled “Update” featuring Eleniyan & Stunna.
He is all set to drop a four-track Extension Play (EP) titled “Smooth Operator” consisting of tracks like Smooth Operator, African Girl, Stronger and I Pray.
Bonzlight has won awards at the African Music Festival in the United Arab Emirates where he is based now.
“I fly the Nigerian flag with pride,” he quipped.
