INTERNATIONAL Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM), Alumni Association, Nigeria Chapter, has decried insecurity in the country.
The old students, at their Fourth Annual Conference, admitted insecurity is a global phenomenon, but its manifestation in Nigeria has become worrisome.
In a communiqué by General Secretary, Dr Abdulgafar Fahm, of Department of Religious Study, University of Ilorin, the group urged the government to employ technology to curb kidnappings and other vices.
According to them, security of lives and properties are sacrosanct; hence the police should explore technology in its drive to tame insecurity.
The alumni urged Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a successful election process in February, saying the Police should collaborate and network with intellectuals to ensure peace and security.
“INEC should ensure all apparatus are set towards a successful general election.
‘’It should engage organisation, such as ours, to add value to the process. Members of the association as well as Muslim Intellectuals are encouraged to participate in politics. This is because they cannot afford to remain unconcerned about happenings in the country,” the group said.
Speaking at the opening, alumni President, Dr Idris Ahmed, said the conference was called to seek a peaceful, decent and egalitarian society.
Ahmed said the theme was chosen to address the violence that comes with the nation’s electoral process.
Emir of Keffi, Dr Shehu Yamusa, represented by Prof. Musa Aibinu, urged members not to forget their alma mater.
Dr Yamusa enjoined them to be more committed to development of the nation.
He advised them to work together to better humanity.
