The Community Development Committee (CDC) in Agbado Oke-Odo Local Government Development Area (LCDA) has held a one-day boxing competition to dissuade youths from social vices.
CDC Chairman Olubowle Kasunmu said: “I realised that the number of youths in the community was increasing and we decided to engage them through vocations and sports. Sports will take away 60 per cent of our youths from crime if the government can channel most of its energy towards providing facilities for our youths.
“Most advanced countries use sports as a means of employment for the youths, so if we can channel our energy towards engaging them into sporting activities, within the next two years, the country will be free from unemployment challenges.”
Kasunmu expressed assurance that the local government would create a platform for youths to excel through vocations and sporting activities with the likes of talents emerging from the competition.
He added that the participants would form a nucleus team whereby they could engage other teams in other local government sporting activities.
“We have plans to start engaging and competing with other local governments, states and even partners with clubs abroad,” he added.
