Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday accused the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Oladipupo Adebutu, of attempting to obstruct police investigation of the murder of Mr. Emmanuel Adeniran, with panicky and cheap visit to the deceased’s family.
The late Adeniran, an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission ((INEC), was allegedly killed in Ogijo area of Sagamu by hoodlums while on duty during the March 18 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
Adebutu, who visited the family of the INEC official a few days ago, was said to have blamed the killing on supporters of the APC in the state, who he accused of trying to arm-twist the deceased into perverting the election results of a polling centre in Ogijo.
But reacting, APC through the state Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, dismissed Adebutu’s allegations as “spurious, trump-up, wicked and obstructive.”
The party, commiserating with the late Adeniran’s family, described Adebutu’s visitation “as panicky, patronising, a cheap and wicked way to seek popularity.”
APC National Youth League (Ogun State Coordinate) has called on the national leadership to suspend the Senator-elect for Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, for allegedly working against the party in the March 18 elections.
The Youth League also urged the party to strip Daniel of every privilege of being a party member; while he is compelled to refund the money he got from the party to prosecute his own election.
These calls were contained in a letter titled: ‘Need to Sanction Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Senator-Elect, Ogun East Senatorial District’, dated March 31, and jointly signed by State Coordinator Fayomi Yunus and Secretary Abbas Ismail.
The letter, addressed to the national chairman, accused the former governor of working against APC’s interest, “a situation which almost scuttled our chances of victory at the polls.”
It added that a discreet investigation showed that Daniel had several nocturnal meetings, ahead of the election, with members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with plans to work against Governor Dapo Abiodun’s re-election.
The youths, thus, called on the national leadership to decide the appropriate action for Daniel as stipulated by the party’s constitution.
The League added that “Daniel was tracked and discovered to have led the PDP machinery that worked for Adebutu in Ogun East, with attendant propaganda instruments led by his prominent aides against Governor Abiodun, without any rebuttal from the former governor.”
