NGO seeks more participation of women in governance

A non governmental organization, Women in Action for Development, has called for urged for more participation of women in governance.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, its convener, Mr. Chinedu Agomuo called for the allocation of presiding offices of the 10th National Assembly to female lawmakers.

Mr. Agomuo expressed concern over the decline in the number of female lawmakers in the National Assembly.

He also urged the incoming Administration to implement the United Nations 50 per cent representation of women in elective and appointed positions.

According to him, the number of women in elective positions had remained the lowest in the world.

“It is important for women to be involved in leadership positions so they make decisions that will benefit the whole society,” he said.

He said the organization, which came into existence in 2004, was founded on the principles of women development, empowerment and support.

A woman activist, Mrs Uzoamaka Okoli, said the society could not move forward without the active participation of women.

She stressed that there was overwhelming evidence that women’s participation in politics is beneficial to their communities and the society at large.

Also, the Director, Net Impact Support Initiative Nigeria, Mrs Rhoda Onyimadu, urged the incoming administration should work hard to eliminate gender discrimination.

She called for equality for all men and women also called for the removal of all barriers that prevent women from participating in politics.

She urged that a conducive environment be created for women to thrive to achieve their full potentials in every facet of life.
