Why Nigerian roads fail, by Works Ministry

The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has said societal development and indiscriminate dumping of refuse are the major causes of drainage systems blockage which leads to road failures.

The ministry’s Director of Highway for North Central, Mr. Bola Aganaba, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja.

The director explained why most roads across the country lack drainage systems.

According to him, one of the major considerations when building roads is the cost.

Aganaba said drains are provided for the areas where they are required for easy water flow.

“We cannot just do drains from the beginning to the end. That would not be cost effective. What we do is to identify some parts that need drains.

“There is no way we would build our roads and not provide drains. This is because if we don’t provide drains, automatically, we know that with time it will fail.

“The challenge is that when you build a road, it attracts development. When the place is developed, then houses start coming up. Besides, there are instances where people build on drainage parts,” he said.
