Group supports one ministerial slot for Ondo

Tinubu

A political pressure group under the aegis of Ondo Future Leaders Group (OFLG) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ignore calls for an additional ministerial slot for Ondo State.

It said it was disappointing that some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) complained over the lone ministerial nomination of Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The group said there was no need for another nomination, to avoid crisis in the APC.

In a statement issued in Akure and signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Ayoola Balogun, the body thanked President Tinubu for picking a young man from the state.

Balogun berated those clamouring for additional slot without sowing the proper seed to harvest in future.

The statement said: “It is regrettable that the so-called leaders are running around to pull the young ministerial hopeful down by selling all manner of lies to the public.

“We must now allow the young ones to lead the party because the old generation has failed us.

“If the President appoints another minister, there will be power struggle and the two ministers will divide the party by trying to woo supporters to themselves. As it is now, we are coming together under a youthful leader, who will lead us to the 2024 governorship election and deliver the state to APC and President Tinubu ahead of 2027.

“We are, therefore, appealing to President Tinubu not to consider the demand of the old political class in Ondo State APC. He should stick to only Hon. Tunji-Ojo as his minister.”

Flooding: Ondo council begins clearing of blocked rivers, canals

The Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State has begun the clearing of blocked rivers, drainages, canals and gullies in areas within the council.

Mr Goke Jatuwase, Chairman, Ilaje LGA,  told the  News Agency Nigeria (NAN) on Monday  that the exercise was  imperative to check recurring  flooding in the area.

NAN reports that on Aug. 1, there was a downpour that caused flooding in areas including Okitipupa, Igbokoda and others, which destroyed several  properties.

Jatuwase appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to come to the aid of residents affected by the flooding which had subjected them to untold hardship.

According to him, many residents are still counting their loses, following the downpour which overflowed river banks, drainages, gullies and canals.

“So, we decided to take preventive measures against recurrence and that is why we began the channelisation of blocked rivers, canals, drainages and gullies for easy passage of erosion.

“We have opened up Ajere canal as well as the canal at the back of Nigeria Navy Officer’s Mess, through to the back of the LG secretariat, to allow free flow of water into the Oluwa River which has been channeled too.

“We have equally contacted the NDDC to come to the aid of our people so that the untold hardship occasioned by the flood can be curtailed and cushioned,” Jatuwase said.
