National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned against patronising drug hawkers and ripening fruits with calcium carbide.
The agency said these practices are harmful to the body.
Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said this yesterday in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, at the Northcentral zone of the agency’s media sensitisation on Dangers of Drug Hawking and Ripening of Fruits with Calcium Carbide organised for Association of Nigerian Health Journalists (ANHJ).

Adeyeye, represented by Director of Evaluation and Research, Patrick Omokpariola, said those bulk items are displayed and measured to unassuming buyers.
He advised the public not to buy dangerous non-detailed packed items to prevent taking contaminated, substandard, expired and adulterated food with health implications.
“Most drugs sold by illiterate and semi-literate drug hawkers are counterfeit, substandard or expired and do not meet quality, safety and efficacy requirement of regulated medicine,” she said.
