Nigeria international striker Victor Osimhen, has been named as one of the nominees for the Best Male Player of the Year award at the Globe Soccer Awards 2023.
The Globe Soccer Awards last year saw Osimhen win the Emerging Player of the Year award while Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti win Coach of the Year.
This term, the Super Eagles forward is in a shortlist of 30 strong players including Argentina’s 2022 World Cup- winning captain, Lionel Messi who last month scooped a record six Ballon d’Or prize in an award where the Napoli striker made the top 10 and finished eighth.
Also in the running for the Globe Soccer Awards 2023 are Bukayo Saka, Mohammed Salah and Andrea’s Onana on the impressive list with other notable names including Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema , Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham , Erling Haaland as swell as nine other members of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League-winning squad
The Globe Soccer Awards, organized by the European Club Association (ECA) in conjunction with the European Association of Player’s Agents (EFAA), were launched in 2010.
Every year since then, an awards ceremony has been held in Dubai in the UAE.
City’s treble-winning manager Pep Guardiola leads the nominations for Best Coach, alongside the likes of Marcel Koller, the Swiss who led Al Ahly to a five-trophy clean sweep in just 10 months, and Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, the most decorated coach in UEFA Champions League history having won the trophy a record four times.
The Maradona Award for the calendar year’s top goalscorer, meanwhile, is being hotly contested by Erling Haaland, Kane, Ronaldo, and Mbappe, who are all separated by only a handful of goals with less than six weeks left of 2023.
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala is on the 20 nominees for the Best Women’s Player category, including Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Aitana Bonmati.
Barcelona midfielder Bonmati is one of six Spanish players shortlisted, along with Salma Paralluelo, Mapi Leon, Patricia Guijarro, Esther Gonzalez and Olga Carmona.
Meanwhile, Napoli president De Laurentiis has been nominated for the President of the Year award, owing to the team’s historic Scudetto success last season.
The other nominees for the award are: Khaldoon Al Mubarak of Manchester City, José Castro of Sevilla, Manuel Rui Costa of Benfica, Herbert Hainer of Bayern Munich, Joan Laporta of Barcelona, Jospeh Oughourlian of Lens and Florentino Perez of Real Madrid. The Awards will be presented early next year on January 19.
