Nnewi community in Anambra State has been thrown into anguish following the death of the Senator representing Anambra South in the red chamber, Ifeanyi Ubah.

Information has it that the chairman of Capital Oil and Gas died in a hotel in London early yesterday morning.

Despite the announcement by the Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu yesterday, there was no official statement from Nnewi, his native town, confirming the incident.

But despair enveloped the community when our correspondent visited yesterday because Ubah was one of the illustrious sons of the community and, indeed, Anambra State.

However, some top indigenes of the community, who did not want to be quoted, confirmed the death of the late politician and businessman to The Nation.

One of the top politicians from the area said: “My good brother, no Nnewi person will talk about such a thing now. We are in pains.

“Ifeanyi Ubah had a large heart and did a lot of things in our place and Anambra as a whole. He used his position to help a lot of people both in this state and outside. Many people will miss him.

“Being the Ebubechukwuzo Nnewi, it will be difficult for any Nnewi person to announce his death in such manner. The palace of Obi Nnewi will be involved,” the source said.

There were conflicting accounts of the senator’s death among the community’s residence yesterday. While one account said he died after a surgery, another source said he attended his daughter’s graduation and slumped after returning to his hotel room.

Ubah, was contesting the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress APC for Anambra 2025, for which many groups and associations had already endorsed him.

He defected to the APC from the Young Progressives Party YPP. He was aged 52.
