Legal Adviser to LegalDigitalNG, Taiwo Balogun, has said the conservative nature of law firms in Nigeria is responsible for slow adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal research.
Speaking on efforts by LegalDigitalNG to help lawyers and their firms adopt AI, Balogun said: “AI component of LegalDigitalNG helps users to undertake legal research more quickly. It uses AI to review statutes, case law, and draft correspondences to offer users accurate information.
“As a result, completing legal research needs lesser time and effort, allowing practitioners to focus on strategic elements of their professions.”
He noted despite benefits of AI in legal research, many firms had not completely adopted it due of their traditional approach to legal research.
“AI is a disruptive technology. It has been deployed and employed in business, finance, and health, he said.

“Utilisation of AI in legal research and drafting is, however, unpopular in Nigeria. M Most firms are still conservative and traditional in their approach, he said.”
Highlighting benefits of AI in legal research, Balogun said: “The application of AI in legal research boosts accuracy of research findings while minimising time lawyers spend manually examining materials.
“AI can also be deployed in drafting correspondences. AI enhances search operations by allowing users to conduct contextual searches rather than keyword searches.
“This means that even if the precise keywords are not there in the documents, attorneys can still locate contextually relevant facts,” he added.
