Ministry commends DHQ for release of abducted health worker, nephew

The Federal Government has commended the military and security agencies for steadfast efforts and collaboration in securing the release of Ganiyat Popoola and her nephew, Master Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy.

The government described their safe return as a significant relief for the entire healthcare community.

Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna was abducted on December 27, 2023 with husband and nephew.

While her husband was released in March, Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity for over 10 months.

The government said the release and safe return of Popoola and her nephew has brought immense relief to the entire healthcare community, who have demonstrated remarkable resilience and unity throughout this challenging period.

On Monday, August 26, 2024, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) went on a seven-day nationwide warning strike over what it described as the inability of the government to rescue Popoola.

Despite the government’s threat to enforce a ‘No work, no pay’ rule on the protesting workers due to the union leadership’s refusal to acknowledge its efforts to secure the release, the union maintained the strike, eventually resuming work a week later.

The government also insisted that the rule would be implemented to the letter.

Following the release of Popoola and her nephew on Wednesday 30 October, the Ministry of Health and Social expressed gratitude to the military and security agencies while commending the bravery and dedication of health workers who continue to serve under challenging circumstances.

The Ministry, in a statement on Friday by its Head of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and protection of all medical professionals throughout the country.

The statement reads in part: “We extend our profound gratitude to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), the dedicated troops, and all military personnel involved in this successful operation for their steadfast commitment to safeguarding our citizens.

“We also deeply appreciate the efforts and tenacity of various medical associations and professional bodies, whose advocacy and encouragement have been invaluable in bolstering the morale of healthcare workers across Nigeria.

“As always, the Ministry will continue to prioritize policies and partnerships aimed at enhancing security measures and creating a safe, supportive working environment for healthcare workers nationwide”.

“Once again, we thank everyone who played a role in this positive outcome.

“The Ministry remains resolute in supporting the well-being, safety, and security of those on the front lines of healthcare across Nigeria”.
