Tinubu seeks Senate’s confirmation of three nominees as INEC commissioners

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday transmitted the names of three nominees for appointment as commissioners in the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The President nominated Tukur Abdulrazak Yusuf and Professor Sunday Nwambam Aja as National Commissioners to represent the Northwest and the Southeast and Saseyi Feyejimi Ibiyemi as the

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read President Tinubu’s request letter during plenary yesterday.

The letter reads: “In compliance with the provision of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of the following three (3) nominees as Commissioners in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“While hoping that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominees in the usual expeditious manner, please accept Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

After reading the letter, Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on INEC for further legislative action.

The committee is to report back in two weeks.
