Lagos state governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on investors to explore the untapped potential of the state’s waterways.
The appeal was made during the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024, held last weekend in Victoria Island.
The regatta, which featured colorful displays by the five Ibile divisions, rowing competitions, and live performances, celebrated Lagos’ vibrant aquatic and cultural heritage.
Speaking after an exploratory tour of Lagos’ waterways aboard a yacht, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the regatta as a “spectacular celebration” of Lagos’ cultural and aquatic legacy.
“This extraordinary event is not just a reflection of our cultural richness but also a vibrant showcase of Lagos’ unique connection to water an essential part of our identity and livelihood,” he said.
The governor highlighted the importance of leveraging the state’s water resources for tourism, recreation, and investment, emphasizing that one-third of Lagos is surrounded by water.
“It is essential to utilize our waterways not only as a mode of transportation but also as a vital ecosystem for tourism. The boat regatta embodies our essence and signifies a transformation and revival of our culture.

“It showcases our unwavering commitment to developing tourism in Lagos through our waterways.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, also commended the regatta, describing it as a testament to Lagosians’ dedication to preserving their heritage and fostering tourism.
“This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,’ highlights the critical role our waterways play in shaping our history and identity,” she said.
Benson-Awoyinka praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his visionary leadership in advancing waterways infrastructure, ensuring environmental sustainability, and fostering economic growth.
“We appreciate the sponsors, organizers, and participants for their contributions and encourage attendees to immerse themselves in the creativity, dynamism, and cultural pride that define Lagos,” she added.
