Sahara Innovation Society champions tech growth in Nigeria

As Nigeria’s tech sector gains global attention, one organization is quietly but steadily shaping the future of its digital ecosystem — the Sahara Innovation Society (SIS).

Founded with a clear purpose, SIS is on a mission to mentor and promote technologists across Nigeria. It aims to create opportunities for innovation to thrive while equipping the next generation of tech leaders with the tools, knowledge, and networks they need to succeed.

“Our goal has always been to connect top talent with opportunity,” said Chika Obasi, a senior member of the association. “We want to build a community where Nigerian tech professionals can grow, collaborate, and lead change.”

The association focuses on five core objectives: mentorship, professional development, policy advocacy, industry collaboration, and innovation support. From hosting bootcamps and masterclasses to shaping digital policy in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other locations in Nigeria, SIS’s presence is being felt across tech sectors.

Its members are top professionals in the field which ranges  from software developers, product managers and cybersecurity specialists to AI researchers and tech entrepreneurs. Many credit SIS for the professional exposure and community that helped them land global jobs, launch startups, or pivot into leadership roles.

“SIS introduced me to mentors who changed the course of my career,” said Olamide Afolabi, a blockchain engineer based in Ibadan. “It’s more than an association. It’s a movement for anyone who believes in the power of technology.”

The association also advises government and private institutions on emerging tech issues and policy development. As Nigeria’s digital economy expands, the insights and recommendations from SIS are increasingly playing a critical role.

With technology reshaping every part of life, SIS is determined to ensure Nigerian technologists are not left behind  but rather, leading the charge.

“We believe in building from within,” Obasi added. “The future is digital, and we’re making sure Nigeria is ready for it.”
