Renowned Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, surrounded by his loved ones.

His company, the Armani Group, confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday, describing him as the “tireless driving force” behind the global brand.

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the statement read.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.

“Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects,” the company said.

Armani’s legacy in the fashion world is unparalleled, with a career spanning over five decades.

Armani’s designs revolutionised modern business dress and Italian fashion, characterised by fluid tailoring and relaxed silhouettes.

He is credited with inventing red-carpet fashion, dressing stars for numerous high-profile events.

His designs have been worn by celebrities like Julia Roberts, George Clooney, and Lady Gaga.

Beyond fashion, Armani expanded his brand into luxury hotels, home furnishings, and fragrances.

The Armani Group encompasses a wide range of businesses, including clothing, accessories, and even a basketball team, Olimpia Milano.

Armani’s impact on Italian culture and the fashion industry has been recognised with numerous awards, including the French Legion of Honour and the Italian Order of Merit for Labour.

Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli paid tribute to Armani, describing him as a “leading figure in Italian culture” who left an indelible mark on contemporary culture.

A funeral chamber will be open on Saturday and Sunday in Milan for well-wishers to pay their respects, although the funeral will be private.

Armani’s death comes just weeks ahead of celebrations marking 50 years of his eponymous label, a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of fashion.
