There was palpable tension and pandemonium in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State yesterday afternoon, following the foiled abduction of a Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2) student, Miss Mikayla Agali, right outside the premises of the Lagoon School.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m., disrupted the tranquility of the area as swift intervention by vigilant parents and bystanders prevented what could have been a tragic disappearance.
It was gathered that the drama unfolded shortly after the school closing hour. Eyewitnesses disclosed to our correspondent that the teenage girl had just exited the school gate when she was accosted by three individuals operating in a black Toyota Camry.
According to sources at the scene, the assailants forcibly attempted to bundle the minor into their waiting vehicle. The victim’s terrified screams alerted her mother, who was waiting in her vehicle a few meters away.
In a display of maternal instinct, the mother reportedly dashed to the scene and engaged the abductors in a physical struggle. However, she was overpowered by the assailants and shoved into a roadside drainage, allowing them to lift the screaming student into their car.
The commotion and the distressed cries of both mother and child drew the immediate attention of other parents who had come to pick up their wards, as well as passersby.
In a rare display of civic bravery, bystanders mobilized instantly. Several parents used their vehicles to barricade the road, blocking the path of the Toyota Camry, while security guards attached to the street gate swung into action, shutting the estate gates to ensure there was no escape route for the suspects.
The abductors were subsequently surrounded and held hostage by the angry crowd until operatives of the Nigeria Police Force arrived at the scene to effect their arrest.
Mr. Emmanuel Akabueze, a parent who witnessed the unfolding drama, recounted the harrowing ordeal to our reporter.
“I was by the gate waiting for my child when I heard sudden shouting, ‘They’ve kidnapped her,” Akabueze said. “I turned and saw the men shoving the woman away violently until she fell into the drainage. They then yanked the girl and threw her into their vehicle.”
He continued, “I raised an alarm, and other parents immediately joined me. We used our vehicles to block their car and alerted the street gate security, who quickly shut the gates. They were trapped until the police arrived.”
By the time our correspondent arrived at the scene, the visibly traumatized victim had been rescued and reunited with her mother.
While the motive initially appeared to be a random kidnapping for ransom, a startling revelation emerged from a family member who pleaded anonymity. The source who stayed behind to speak with our reporter disclosed to The Nation that the suspects were not random criminals but estranged relatives of the girl’s father.
The source alleged that the abduction was a desperate attempt to subject Miss Mikayla to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), an arcane cultural practice the family had been resisting.
“We have been under constant pressure from family members demanding this harmful practice, despite it being against the law,” the family source revealed. “We have suffered emotionally and physically because of our refusal to yield to tradition. I am relieved they were stopped before they succeeded.”
The source used the opportunity to call on the Lagos State Government and law enforcement agencies to provide adequate protection for the child and her immediate family, citing threats to their safety.
When contacted for comments, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident. Although he noted that he was yet to receive a comprehensive briefing from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area, SP Hundeyin assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. “We are aware of the incident, and the suspects are in custody. Further information will be provided to the public as investigations progress,” Hundeyin stated.
As at the time of filing this report, the Police were yet to provide additional information regarding the incident.
