Justice Demola Bakre (rtd) yesterday said the violent attack and subsequent injuring of an Ekiti State High Court judge by political thugs portends grave danger for Nigeria and her democracy.
Justice Bakre who retired from the Ogun State judiciary in 1999, said what happened in Ekiti State is a pointer to the fact that “thugs have taken over the court.”
He said with the situation like the one that happened in Ekiti, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the officers of the temple of justice to carry out their duty freely and justiceably without fear of coming to harm.
He rued the fact that an attack could be carried out on a judge without the law enforcement rising up to protect him from the attackers and restore decorum in the premises, saying the development equally threatened the saying that the court is the last hope of the common man.
