THE President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has lauded members of the European Union (EU) and the United States (U.S.) for standing by Nigeria during its challenging period, before and during the ongoing elections.
Receiving the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Fulvio Rustico, at his Abuja residence yesterday, Gen. Buhari said the EU nations and the U.S. played key roles in the nation’s stabilisation during the critical period.
The president-elect, who received a letter of congratulation from the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella which was delivered by Ambassador Rustico, promised to pay attention to areas that would enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Italian President congratulated Gen. Buhari on his victory and hailed Nigerians for the peaceful conduct of the elections.
He said Italy was prepared to assist Nigeria in managing domestic terrorism, drawing from their own experience with internal terror in the 1970s and 1980s.
Also yesterday, the Nigerian community in Oman welcomed Gen. Buhari’s victory in the presidential election, describing the outcome of the polls as one that has brought happiness to everyone in their community.
In a letter to the president-elect, Chairman of the Nigerian community, Dr. Ben Nnamdi Emenyeonu, said: “The overwhelming mandate you received through the ballots speaks volumes about the magnitude of the trust Nigerians reposed in you, and we believe your leadership will mark the beginning of an era in which safety, sanity and probity will make a return to governance and the general way of life in our dear nation.”
