Father of two ‘hangs self’

The body of a young man was found yesterday on a rope which he allegedly used to hang himself last Friday.

The building, a one storey structure at Oke-Agala area of Mokola, Ibadan, where the incident occurred, was deserted by the occupants who complained of an offensive odour oozing out from the room where the victim’s body hung.

The victim, a father of two and a commercial driver, was said to have been separated from his wife and children.

He was identified as Abass Adeniyi, a native of Oja’gbo , Ibadan in Ibadan North East Local Government of Oyo State by some of the tenants who described him as a gentleman.

The landlord, Ibrahim Akanbi, claimed to have seen him last on Friday night.

According to one of the tenants, the victim moved into the house two months ago.

A police source said the matter was reported at the Mokola Police Station and some policemen were dispatched to the scene.

“It is unfortunate that a young man full of strength could decide to take his life. We are still investigating what might have led to his decision. When our men got there, we discovered some items that raised some probing questions.

“As a matter of fact, we are still investigating,” a senior police officer said.

At the time of filing this report, the decomposing body was still hanging in the middle of the room.

“It is expected that the body should be deposited in the mortuary, but we don’t know why the policemen who visited last Monday left without a word.

“Since Monday, residents cannot sleep in their houses because of the odour and fear. Please help us beg the police to do something now,” a resident, Rotimi Amoo said.

Later, some traditionalists performed some rituals to cleanse the house.

“Nobody can touch the corpse as it is without performing this ritual. It is a taboo in Yoruba land for one to touch it.

“After the ritual, the family will take the body for burial and this is what we are doing now”, one of Ifa priests, who gave his name as Baba Idera, said.
