Judge’s absence stalls trial of priests

The absence of Justice Isa Bature Gafai of the Federal High Court I in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday stalled the trial of two Catholic priests.

The priests were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 35-count of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

No reason was given for Gafai’s absence and the matter was adjourned till December 3.

Before now, the defendants approached the Court of Appeal for a stay of proceedings in their trial at the Federal High Court.

But the Court of Appeal, on October 27, dismissed the motion on notice.
