APC wins as Oyo tribunal nullifies LP lawmaker’s victory

The Oyo State House of Assembly election petitions tribunal in Ibadan has nullified the election of Labour Party’s (LP’s) Gbenga Oyekola.

It declared Ganiyu Waliu Adekunle of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the April 11 election in Atiba constituency.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyekola winner of the election, despite allegation of malpractices by the APC and its candidate.

Justice Ahmed Muhammed said Oyekola was not duly elected and cancelled results in some units.

After deducting results in the affected units, the APC candidate polled 9,485 and the LP 9,416.

The State High Court, venue of the tribunal, erupted in wild jubilation after the judgment.

In Oyo town, a convoy of over 70 cars and buses stopped at the Ilora end of the ancient town where palace drummers were waiting.

They were later ushered into town. After dancing round the town in a carnival-like procession, they converged on the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo at 7pm.

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi advised Waliu to continue his good deeds, adding that he would continue to support performers, who are committed to the development of the ancient town.

Adekunle thanked his constituents, especially APC members in the four local government areas, promising not to let them down.
