EFFORTS at achieving political stability and maintaining peace in Africa will continue to receive Nigeria’s support, President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday.
He gave this assurance while receiving the special envoys of President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President, in a statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said under his leadership, Nigeria would remain in the forefront of efforts to achieve enduring peace, security and progress in African nations.
This, he said, was because whatever happens elsewhere in Africa affects Nigeria directly or indirectly.
He stressed that African leaders must do their best to achieve greater peace, political stability and security within their countries to enable them give more attention to the task of improving the living conditions of their people.
Thanking the envoys, Maj.-Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye and Ambassador Dieudonne Kwizera, for briefing him on recent political developments in Burundi, Buhari hoped that other parties and leaders in the country would resolve their differences peacefully and learn to work together for the development of their country.
He welcomed ongoing efforts by Nkurunziza to enthrone peace and national reconciliation in Burundi.
