Ugbe-Akoko regent dead

There is confusion in Ugbe-Akoko in Akoko North Local Government Area of Ondo State, following the death of its Regent, Princess Lucia Akeju.

Sources said the 52-year-old community head was in Lagos to take care of her daughter, who  just delivered, when she reportedly died after a brief illness.

Princess Akeju had ruled the town in the last seven years, following the demise of the substantive monarch.

Community leaders are anxious about the development, which has created a fresh “interregnum” on the Ugbe Akoko stool.

It was learnt that they have written to the local government on the development, which they described as “pathetic”.

Besides, the concerned indigenes have urged the House of Assembly to legislate against any regent spending more than two years on the throne.

Many towns in Akoko land are ruled by regents, ranging from three to 25 years.

Prominent among the towns are Ikakumo, Akungba-Akoko, Afin-Akoko, Iboropa and Iye, among others.
