Ex- Lafiya Dole commander dies in crash

•GOC injured. Troops repel Boko Haram

The immediate past Theatre Commander of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Major General Yusha’u Mahmood Abubakar died on Tuesday in a ghastly auto crash along the Maiduguri/Damaturu high way. He was travelling to Damaturu.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Army, Brigadier General Muhammed Aliyu, was injured in the crash.

The cause of the accident is yet unclear, but the victims were brought to the Emergency Ward of Gen. Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital before being conveyed back to Maiduguri to be flown to Abuja.

According to a military source, Major General Abubakar, who was of the Army Headquarters, was coming from Abuja enroute Maiduguri International Airport to graduate a special military force in Buni Yadi, Yobe State.

He was received at the Airport by the GOC 3 Division before they embarked on the ill- fated journey to Damaturu. The accident occurred after Benishiek town.

Some of the early sympathizers at the hospital were the Yobe State Deputy Governor, Abubakar Aliyu, Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, Police Commissioner, Zanna Muhammed Ibrahim, Head of Service of Yobe State Civil Service, Dauda Yahaya and others.

The Nigerian Army yesterday in Abuja announced the death of its Chief of Training and Operations of the Army, Major General Yushau Mahmood Abubakar in a road accident along Maiduguri-Damaturu Road.

The Army confirmed the accident in a statement which said Brig-Gen. Aliyu is receiving treatment after sustaining some injuries.

The Army also said the Troops 26 and 28 Task Force Brigades repelled a dawn attack by fleeing Boko Haram terrorists on the military locations at Pulka and Bitta on the fringes of Sambisssa Forest.

Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Usman Kukasheka said: “Troops of 114 Task Force Battalion came under three-pronged attack by Boko Haram terrorists fanning out of Sambisa forest from Damboa, Tokumbere and Pulka axis.

“At the end of the debacle, two Boko Haram insurgents paid for their atrocities with their lives while several others sustained gun shot injuries. The fate that befell those that attacked Pulka was more dreadful.

“The gallant troops also recovered 11 AK-47 rifles, 3 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), 1 Browning Machine Gun (BMG) and 2 Toyota Hilux vehicles. Others are a 60mm Mortar tube, 7 boxes of 12.7mm ammunition and 1 belt of 12.7mm ammunition.”
