The National Fire Protection West Africa Conference, which held at Oriental Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos, has ended.

The conference, which started last Tuesday, ended on Thursday.

Its organisers said the conference was meant to train and educate fire safety practitioners and the public on the importance of fire protection and safety.

They said it provided an avenue for participants to exchange knowledge and experiences on the state of fire protection in West Africa.

The conference was attended by professionals in life, fire, electrical and building safety as well as architects, engineers, project managers, enforcement officers, insurance and risk assessors.

The participants chose from five modules: Life Safety and Means of Egress; Notification in NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm; Suppression in NFPA 13 Automatic Sprinkler System; Special Cases in NFPA 2001 Clean agent Protection for Computers and Data Centres and NFPA 409 Fire Protection for Aircraft Hangers.

The modules were facilitated by seasoned NFPA instructors.

A participant said: “They (facilitators) offered us a unique look at standards. They also taught us why certain aspects of the acceptable fire standards came about and what changes in the industry necessitated the changes.

“All the facilitators had at least 25 years of industry experience – from speaking to consulting, design, implement and acceptability testing of fire-fighting systems.

“They were able to relay the standards to real life experience and answer many questions that were posed by the participants.”

A member of the organising committee, Roland Ngong, said: “We are excited at the response and could not think of a better place to hold this conference than in Lagos, the economic capital and hub of West Africa. We look forward to a safer and fire-protected West Africa. We also look forward to having you next.

“Thanks to our sponsors, Naffco, Scffeco, Safety Consultants, facilitators and especially our NFPAWA team, for making this a success.”
