Mrs. Tope Adeniran, sister of Mayowa Ahmed, the cancer patient in the middle of a fundraising scam allegation, has lamented the family has gone through indescribable stress to clear the allegations by Nollywood actress Toyin Aimakhu and blogger Linda Ikeja since last Thursday.
The police have since waded into the matter and frozen the account said to be about N30 million.
After interrogating members of the family at the police headquarters in Ikeja on Friday, Mrs. Adeniran said the police visited the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to get a statement from Mayowa despite her frail state.
Prior to police arrival, she said the hospital tried to forcefully discharge her for “security reasons” because of the publicity the case had generated.
“We’ve been going through a lot of stress. My brother was with the police yesterday answering questions.
“I was at the hospital then when all of a sudden a director of LUTH called Dr Adewunmi said we should take her away for security reasons, theirs and ours.
“While we were still there, confused about the issue, the police called that they heard that we had left LUTH. And we said no. They told us not to leave.
“Around 5pm, police came to LUTH and took a statement from her. She is so sick but she tried to answer them,” she said.
Clarifying the choice of going to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) instead of Emory as assumed by most people, Mrs. Adeniran said the family approached hospitals in the US, South Africa, India and Dubai.
“Initially, we thought of the U.S. because we have a sister there. We approached Emory and their business person talked to us about what it would take.
“We were considering the cost. But it wasn’t as if we had the money to take any decision. It was by Tuesday when we saw there was funds we took a decision about Dubai.
“We decided the U.S. was too far for her to travel considering her state. We decided on Dubai because a friend’s father was treated there for cancer and we got a contact in the hospital who talked to us and they were the only ones that gave us a treatment plan.
“It was easy settling for Dubai because getting their visa is not difficult and the journey is not as far as the U.S. But people started twisting things,” she said
