Ex-militant, brother remanded in prison for ‘possessing’ firearms

An ex-militant in Edo State, General Pere Ejune and his younger brother, Trim Ade, have been remanded to prison for allegedly being in possession of double-barrel gun, a cut-to-size double-barrel gun and 18 live cartridges.

The brothers were arraigned before an Evbuoriaria Magistrate Court in Benin City.

They were arrested last week Friday after Ade was caught with the firearms at Upper Sakpoba road in Ikpoba-Okha local government area of the state.

Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. C.E. Oghuma, remanded the duo in Oko Prison and adjourned the case to October 20 for further hearing.

She ordered that the original case file be duplicated and sent to the office of the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Counsel to the accuse persons, Barr, Olayiwola Afolabi, said the ex-militant was being prosecuted for political reasons.

He said: “They were charged to court for unlawful possession of firearms under the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions.)

“You can only charge a person to court for unlawful possession of firearms when a case of robbery has been established. In this case, there was no case of robbery.”
