Reps summon agency’s chief over Kaduna tremor

House of Reps

The Director General of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Alex Nwegbu, is to appear before the House of Representatives following the earth tremor in Jaba Local Government of Kaduna State.

Nwegbu is expected to provide a seismic report on the magnitude of the tremor in Jaba, and any other area threatened by it.

The invitation followed a motion by Sunday Marshall Katung (PDP, Kaduna), who regretted that the tremor destroyed several property.

Noting that there could be a recurrence, Katung said: “There is a need for the Federal Government to carry out an in-depth investigation to determine the immediate and remote cause(s) of the tremor  to avert a recurrence.”

The House urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to ascertain the level of destruction and reclaim damaged areas.

It urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to victims.

The motion was unanimously passed after it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

The Senate also expressed its readiness to deliberate on measures at averting a recurrence of the tremor.

This followed a Point of Order by Senator Danjuma La’ah at plenary yesterday.

La’ah said the Senate should  address the problem to prevent it from degenerating into an earthquake.

“It is a serious issue, and I am requesting this House to call on relevant agencies to assess the situation before it gets out of hand.

“If nothing urgent is done, there may be earthquakes in the near future,” he said.

Senate President Bukola Saraki noted that the development required the contribution of relevant stakeholders.

He urged La’ah to present a motion for a robust debate on the way forward.

“I believe the best way is in a way-forward motion. The matter is important enough for us to come under a motion.

“When presented, we will debate it and look at the way forward,” Saraki said.
