A group, under the aegis of Concerned Citizens for Educational Development, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, for removing 13 vice chancellors of Federal universities.
It said the minister’s action contradicted the nation’s academic processes.
A statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Convener, Solomon Adodo, described Adamu’s sack of the 13 VCs and appointment of replacements without recourse to the universities’ Governing Councils as a misplacement of priority, an abuse of the constitution and the 2009 ASUU/Federal Government terms of agreement and the 2012 Memorandumof Understanding (MoU).
The group noted that the new vice chancellors came from the same institutions and states, in contradiction of academic processes.
The statement said: “We, therefore, call on President Buhari to maintain his integrity and uphold transparency/due process by immediately sacking the Minister of Education for causing the Federal Government this avoidable embarrassment.
“The President should order and ensure the reinstatement of the wrongly sacked vice chancellors so that they can complete their tenures. He should further direct the Ministry of Education to comply with laid down procedure of advertising, interviewing and appointment of vice chancellors by Governing Councils.”
