The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of an officer of the command and four other people in a violent attack at Omoku town, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State by suspected cultists on the eve of Nigerian Independence Day celebration.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP, Nnamdi Omoni said the police officer died while in active service.
Omoni narrated that the hoodlums had invaded the palace of Oba, Eze Chukwumela Obi II, Oba of Ogbaland and taken hostage of the area.
The Police spokesman noted that the murdered policeman came to the scene to repel the attack in the area, but regretted that he was over powered by the bandit.
Omoni said: “It is true, that thing happened on Saturday. The gunmen attacked the place and our man went to repel the attack. It was only him, so the gunmen killed him and later ran away. The policeman died while on duty.”
It was gathered that the unknown gunmen first invaded Udoji Street in Omoku and killed a man before moving to Palace road in Omoku town where four people were killed including the policemen attached to the Ogba of ogbaland.
A source, who said the families of the deceased persons have long deposited the corpses at a mortuary, called on the state government to appoint a new caretaker committee chairman for the Local Government in the area who would help in tackling insecurity in the area.
