Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has promised improved welfare packages for teachers in the state as internally generated revenue improves.
The governor spoke yesterday at the Teachers’ House in Ilorin, the state capital, during this year’s World Teacher’s Day celebration with the theme: Valuing Teachers, Improving Their Status.
Ahmed said the teachers in the state would continue to enjoy better support from his administration because they remained important in the development of the society.
The governor said teachers’ challenges should be tackled from national perspective to give them the required attention.
He attributed the inability to pay salaries across the country to age-long reliance on the proceeds from oil.
But Ahmed said better days were ahead in the state as his administration was improving the internally generated revenue (IGR).
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Musa Abubakar, expressed concern over the current economic challenges.
The union leader said workers, especially the teachers, were the worst hit under the current recession, which had made it difficult for 27 states to pay teachers’ salaries.
