‘Police recover N2.7m bribe money’

The Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) yesterday said it resolved 324 cases of misconduct and recovered N2.7 million bribe collected by officers between July and September.

It said the 324 cases were part of 405 petitions received from the public against policemen.

According to a statement by the unit’s Head, Abayomi Shogunle, said 51 petitions were discovered to be false, with 30 pending.

Shogunle, who noted that cases of police misconduct were declining, said Rivers State Police Command topped with 74 petitions.

He said Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) came second and third with 72 and 48 cases.

“The third quarter report shows that over half of complaints against the police came from four states – Rivers, Lagos, FCT-Abuja and Anambra, amounting to 55.06 per cent.

“No complaint was reported against the police in six states – Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Osun and Sokoto. Kebbi remains the only command with no complaint against the police since inception of CRU last November’’, Shogunle said.

Continuing, he added: “Professional misconduct topped the complaint distribution category with 154 entries, followed by demanding money for bail with 144 entries. Two hundred and ninety-four complaints were received through phone calls, 55 by WhatsApp, 20 from Twitter, 19 as email, six through Facebook, two by SMS, one on BBM and eight from letters and media publications.

“The sum of N2.7 million bribe money bribe money was recovered from an ACP serving in one of the State commands after a complaint was made to the CRU through a telephone call. Necessary disciplinary procedures are ongoing against the officer involved in the unacceptable conduct.”
