Power sector loses 3,946MW to constraints

The Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) on Friday said it lost a total of 3,946 Mega Watts (MW) to gas and line constraints on Tuesday.

According to its daily briefing on the power sector, the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (SO) of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) sent out 3,546MW to the 11 distribution companies (DisCos) on the day under review.

Were there no constraints in the sector, the generation companies would have produced 7,492MW on Tuesday.

Although there were no losses due to water management and high frequency constraint, the recorded losses due to constraints culminated in a loss of N1.8billion in the sector.

NESI said that : “On October 25 2016, average power sent out was 3546MWh/hour (up by 24MW) .The reported gas constraint was 3545MW. The reported line constraint was 401MW and the reported high frequency constraint is 0MW, according to TCN. The water management constraint was 0MW.The power sector lost an estimated N1,894, 000, 000 on October 25 2016 due to constraints.”

Of the total power generated on Tuesday, the three hydroelectric power stations, produced 1,029MW with 182MW from Kainji, 454MW from Jebba and 393MW from Shiroro.
The report however noted that eight power plants recorded 0MW production but the sector generated 2,517MW from the gas power plants.

NESI said that Egbin generated 476MW, Sapele I 62MW, Delta 304MW, Geregu I 87MW, Omotosho I 162MW, Olorunsogo I 159MW, Geregu NIPP 94MW, Sapele NIPP 108MW, Alaoji NIPP 133MW, Olorunsogo NIPP 178MW, Odukpani NIPP 68MW, Ihovbor 70MW, Okpai 385MW, Omoku 37MWEgbin ST6 116MW and Paras Energy 40MW.

The report noted that on the day under review, spinning reserve was 5MW while frequency was within 6 per cent.

The Nation learnt from the daily technical report of Wednesday that our correspondents stumbled on, that generation at 01:00am was 3,000MW, 3,027.30MW at 01:23, and 2,819.30MW at 01:33am.

It was learnt that the SO allocated 345.07MW to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company at 01:00am, 348.14MW at 01:23 and 324.22MW at 01:33am.

The Nation gathered from the situation report that although there was no major breakdown, “some 33KV & 11KV feeders are out due to low generation and allocation.”
