The Federal Government has released N158.3 million intervention fund to the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development for safer mining operations.
The money is aimed at reducting lead and mercury exposure, as well as environmental contamination in small scale gold mining in Zamfara State.
The Assistant Director, Press, Mr. Stephen Kilebi, said in a release that lead poisoning of children occurred in some communities in Zamfara in 2010 because of dry milling of gold ore by artisanal and small scale miners, which resulted in the death of many of the children and some of the victims are still being treated.
He said the intervention fund was announced in Gusau, the Zamfara State Capital at a Press Conference by Mr Obiora Azubike, the Director of Artisinal and Small Scale Mining, Ministry of Mines and Steel Development who led a technical team on advocacy and sensitisation visit to the state.
Azubike said the essence of the visit was to sensitise the government and the people of Zamfara State that the Ministry was ready to continue the implementation of its programme of safer mining operations in the state since the intervention fund was available, adding that their support and cooperation was needed.
He said the fund would be used for the installation of Wet Milling Machines, provision of bore holes at mineral processing sites, introduction and installation of three- number Igoli processing machines for gold extraction.
