Pastor’s son torches neighbour’s room

The police yesterday arraigned a 19-year-old student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly destroying a N2.1 million building.

Bright Nora, who lives on Ile-Ogbo Street in Abule Egba, Lagos, was accused of torching a house because the occupants complained of being disturbed by his mother’s religious activities.

Nora’s mother runs a church behind their house at 35, Ile-Ogbo Street, Abule – Egba.

It was gathered that the tenants had reported the pastor to their landlord for allegedly disturbing them before confronting her.

This, it was learnt, degenerated into a fight.

Prosecuting Sergeant Mariam Dauda told the court that the incident occurred on December 4 around 4pm.

Dauda said the accused torched the building when the occupants confronted him and his mother.

“The accused, in a bid to deal with the occupants of the compound after challenging his mother, set ablaze the building belonging to Mrs Nkiru Michael,” Dauda said.

The offence, she said, contravened Section 339 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

Magistrate O.O.A. Fowowe-Erusiafe directed that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment.

She ordered that the accused be kept in prison custody pending perfection of his bail terms.

The magistrate adjourned the case till January 16.
