Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo is in the running for another prestigious award less
than three days after emerging FIFA best player of the year. This time around the Portugal
international has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the year. The 31 year old will
however not been clinching the award on a platter as he has world fastest man and three time winner
Usain Bolt to contend with. Others in the running for the award include Sir Mo Farah and Sir Andy
Murray, Stephen Curry and LeBron James.
The nominees are made from a panel comprising of the leading sports journalists, editors and
broadcasters. The winners are announced at a ceremony in Monaco on February 14.
Bolt, nominated after successfully defending 100m, 200m and 4x100m titles at the Rio Olympics to become
a nine-time gold medallitst, said: ‘The Laureus Awards really matter. The fact they are given by the
Laureus Academy which includes so many great sportsmen and women makes them special.
