Ohanaeze advocates political, economic restructuring

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has recommended political and economic restructuring of the country to facilitate development.

Ex-President Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that in the 1960s, the regions and the country developed due to political and economic structure.

He said: “Then, there was patriotism, which moved production and development from the region to the centre, ensuring each region specialised in what it could produce.

“Most of the development in the North was achieved through export of groundnut.

“The Southwest profited from cocoa sales, leading to its economic and educational expansion.

“In the Southeast and Southsouth, palm produce boosted the zones’ economy.’’

The Ohanaeze chieftain said the body, through representatives, advocated restructuring at the 2014 National Conference in Abuja.
