Despatch rider charged with N583,320 theft

A dispatch rider, Peter Owoicho, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N583,320 paid by customers of Jumia Foods via Point of Sale (POS).
Owoicho, 29, of 34, Corona Street, Oshodi, Lagos was employed last year by a delivery firm to supply fruits to Jumia Foods customers in Lagos and accept payment by POS machine or cash.
The police said between November last year and this month at different locations, he tricked the customers that his POS had rejected some of the payments they made with their Automated Teller (ATM) cards.
It said the customers were made to complete their transactions with cash.
Owoicho was accused of forging the transaction ID and pin numbers and telling his office that they were POS payments.
The scam was discovered when the firm began a reconciliation of its accounts with that of its customers, earlier than usual.
Owoicho, who was arraigned before Magistrate A. T. Omoyele, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and forgery.
Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji said the offences were committed at 20, Eleshin Street, Obalende, Lagos and other locations within the city by Owoicho and an accomplice who is at large.
Owoicho pleaded not guilty.
