Mother of four dies after caesarian section

Tragedy struck in the ancient city of Kano on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, when a mother of four died, moments after undergoing caesarian section at a private hospital to deliver her fifth child.

The 37-year old woman, whose first child died at birth, hailed from Iheakwu-Awku, Igbo Eze South Local Government Area of Nsukka, Enugu State.

Until her death on January 17, 2017, she was a sachet water and soft drinks retail trader on France road, Sabon Gari, Kano.

Proceeds from the small scale business, according to our findings were used for the upkeep of the family, as she was said to be the breadwinner.

Furthermore, according to our investigation, the ages of her four kids range between eight, six, four and two respectively before the last, delivered via caesarian section, who survived, while the woman died after delivery.

However, due to abject level poverty level of the family, the husband, said to be a tricycle operator lacked the financial muscle to offset the N120, 000 charged by the first hospital she was rushed to for the usual caesarian section when she was due for delivery.

At the 11th hour, as a last resort, the husband, identified as Chidi Eze had no alternative than to hastily rush his wife, who was writhing in pains to ECWA hospital, Airport Road, Kano, where she was eventually admitted.

Also, it was learnt that Doctors on call duty successfully performed the caesarian session, at the end of which she was delivered of a baby boy, who is alive to date.

But as fate will have it, moments after she was safely delivered of the baby boy, her body chemistry became unstable, degenerated from bad to worse and finally gave up the ghost.

Her body, it was gathered was deposited at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano (AKTH) mortuary until Thursday, January 26, 2017 when her church members from Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Cathedral Church, Sabon Gari held a wake-keep for her.

The following day, Friday, January 27, 2017, her kinsmen/society members conveyed her remains to her home town for burial rites.

When our reporter stumbled on the devastated husband, yesterday, with beads of tears rolling down his cheeks, he said, now that the bread winner of the family has departed to the great beyond, he queried: ”How will I fend for the children, including the surviving baby boy, delivered through caesarian section, he lamented.

He soon became demoralized, as tears blurred his vision and became speechless, but murmured, may the Almighty Father send me a Good Samaritan to wipe away my tears of agony!

Meanwhile, her kinsmen/women, who have accompanied her remains to her last resting place promised to deliberate on how to share her children among members for their future upkeep.

For now, it was learnt that a relation of the husband has undertaken to nurture the innocent motherless baby.

Contacted, a Kano-based medical practitioner, Dr Frank Akabugu, said any mother can undergo more than five caesarian section and remain alive, as long as a qualified Doctor carried out the caesarian section.

He however advised upcoming couples to instead embrace birth control measures, rather than embark on incessant caesarian section.
