The Kano State government has approved over N578,565,178.51 for the payment of 44,654 primary school teachers and other non-teaching personnel, under the state Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB), who received notional promotions in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Commissioner for Information Muhammad Garba told reporters yesterday that the council, under the chairmanship of Deputy Governor Hafiz Abubakar, approved the payment from June, following negotiations the with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT).
He said: “After series of deliberations between the government and the unions, especially in view of the state’s financial situation, it was unanimously agreed that the workers would forfeit their arrears.
“As at May 2017, the government was paying primary school teachers N2,332,950,764. 50, but with the new development, their salaries will rise to N2,911,515,943.01.”
Garba added that Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant-General have been ordered to ensure implementation of the increased salaries from June.
