‘Why Ogoni youths did not embrace Rivers amnesty ‘

The President of KAGOTE (Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme), an Ogoni Socio-cultural organisation, Dr. Peter Medee, yesterday disclosed the reason why militants, cultists and other hoodlums in Ogonilanddid not submit much arms to Rivers State Amnesty Committee.

He said the reason was because the cultists and other hoodlums in Ogoni need to get their godfathers’ approval to submit their arms.

Speaking at first Ogoni Youth Consultative Round Table, which was held at Londa Hotel, Orazi, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Medee said there is need for Ogoni youths to be sincere about themselves.

Medee who is also a member, Board of Trustee on Ogoni clean-up, alleged that “politicians were responsible for the refusal of some Ogoni youths to submit their arms and ammunition. Even the new style of beheading was because they need to show their master the victim’s head. If you are here and you are into cultism or a gang leader, then you are deceiving yourself.

“We made several engagements with the governor of Rivers State and he made provision for the amnesty programme for Ogonis. That special amnesty gave birth to the peace we have in Ogoni now. Even though we did not achieve much result, at least, there is relative peace in Ogoni land now,” he said.

The National Coordinator of Ogoni Youths Federation (OYF) Worldwide, Comrade YamaabanaLegborsi, the convener of the event, said “the challenges are rampart cultism, incessant killings, kidnapping and maiming of youths as well as communal crises resulting to burning down of houses which have rendered people homeless and forced them to become refuges in their home land.”
