Ekiti teachers mobilise for 2018 poll

The Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in Ekiti State, Mr. Olusola Adigun, has urged teachers in the state to get their voter’s cards to vote in next year’s governorship election.

Adigun advised them to avoid sitting on the fence in the current voter registration, which will enable them to have their say in who becomes governor in the 2018 election.

Adigun, who spoke yesterday at a ceremony for retired teachers as part of activities marking this year’s World Teachers’ Day, said teachers’ future in the state would depend on who becomes the governor, as government remained the largest employer of labour.

At the ceremony, mattresses, cooking gases and other kitchen utensils were distributed to 24 retirees, who were members of the union before retirement.

Adigun said: “How bright your careers will be depends on who becomes the governor. Some of the teachers are in the habit of running analyses and commentaries when they have no voter cards to vote during election. I want us to stop this because Section 14, subsection 2, Paragraph C asserts free participation of people in their government.

“Therefore, teachers must be ready to exercise their political rights to determine who governs them. The quality of our brains and our products should manifest in the quality of those we concede our states to.

“So, every teacher must register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and obtain their voter’s cards and move en masse to vote reasonably.”
