Abandoned child mother pleads for help

A 16-year-old pupil in Niger State has appealed to the government for assistance to cater for her son after the man who put her in the family way absconded.

The Junior Secondary School pupil of Government Day Secondary School, Tunga Minna, was put in the family way by her assistant headteacher, Mohammed Mohammed, in March.

She was delivered of a baby boy in Injita, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State, on October 28.

The victim and her family said Mohammed did not provide any assistance to them during and after the pregnancy.

Mohammed was arraigned on April 4, and charged with having unlawful sex with a child, and impregnating her.

He was in custody for three months, after pleading not guilty.

The accused was admitted to bail at N1 million.

He transferred to an unknown school after his bail.

The victim begged the government to help her cater for her son and further her education.

“I am not happy being a mother at this age, but I won’t allow the incident shatter my dreams of becoming a nurse. I still want to further my education because I want to be a nurse,” said.

Her father, Haruna Galadima, urged the government to ensure Mohammed lives up to his responsibility.

“What I want now is for my daughter to be taken care of by the man who impregnated her; he should take full responsibility of the baby’s needs,” he said.

Director-General, State Child Rights’ Agency Mairam Kolo assured the parents and the victim that the agency will find the accused, and make him face his responsibility.

She added that the agency will ensure justice for the victim and see that she returns to school.

Kolo said the agency wrote the Ministry of Education to give part of Mohammed salary to the victim monthly.
